A manifesto to reclaim our future: stop banks and government money from financing climate destruction.

Across the world, heat records are being broken year after year. Families are losing their homes to devastating floods, farmers are watching crops fail, and parents are wondering how to raise children on a planet that is already burning.

This climate crisis is visible in our everyday lives, and the financial system driving it is deeply connected to all of us. The banks we rely on to save, borrow and build our futures are using our money to fuel the industries causing climate breakdown.

When you deposit your salary into a regular savings account or contribute to a pension fund, that money does not simply sit idle. Instead, banks often invest a portion of those funds into sectors like oil, gas or industrial agriculture through loans or shareholdings, directly linking your everyday finances to climate-harming activities. Most people have no idea that their hard-earned money could be supporting projects that threaten our future.

We are stretching every coin to get through the cost-of-living crisis, trying to save for a home or contribute to a pension fund for retirement. But banks channel the money we deposit, save, or borrow into fossil fuels and harmful industrial agriculture. These investments accelerate climate chaos and put our future at risk. But you can make a difference: ask your bank where your money goes or what its policy is on fossil fuel and harmful agribusiness investments.

Why banks and governments are funding the climate chaos

Between 2016 and 2022, banks invested $3.2 trillion into fossil fuels and $370 billion into harmful industrial agriculture in the Global South.

At the same time, corporations responsible for the climate crisis continue to benefit from government support. Globally, fossil fuels receive over $1.5 trillion in subsidies annually. Meanwhile, real climate justice solutions remain underfunded.

This is not a lack of money. It is a lack of political will.

Women and youth are powering entire villages in Vanuatu with off-grid renewable energy.

Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities in Brazil are defending forests that protect the planet.

Women in Tanzania are leading agroecology cooperatives that nourish communities, families and regenerate soils.

Frontline communities are rebuilding after climate disasters with dignity and determination.

Universal access to quality education, health, social protection, energy, water, and sanitation builds human capabilities, reduces inequality, and strengthens the social contract between governments and citizens.

These are solutions that work! They reduce emissions, create jobs, restore ecosystems and strengthen communities. They need to be funded.

No more money for industries destroying our climate, land, water, and lives.

2. Governments: redirect finance to real climate solutions
Invest in agroecology, public services, community resilience and renewable energy.

3. Respect the rights of communities
Guarantee land rights, free prior and informed consent, and promote gender justice.

4. Ensure transparency and accountability
Banks should come clean about how they use our money, stop harmful investments, and stick to rules that protect our future.
